Toyota Supra

The Toyota Supra with its sleek lines and sexy curves, was a winning formula both on the street and the track. It is and always will be a true Japanese sports car, the King of Japanese sports cars, the Toyota Supra

The Toyota Supra finally broke it’s bond with the Celica in 1986 and became a totally separate model with the birth of the Mark III.The new Toyota Supra engine was the flagship of engines for Toyota, with 4 valves per cylinder and dual overhead cams, with a set of turbos slung of the inlet side it produced 230HP (173kw) AT 5600RPM.

This third generation Toyota Supra was the epitome of technology in 1986 with 4 channel ABS, electronically controlled double wishbone suspension front and rear and ACIS which was a method for controlling the air compression pulses in the inlet manifold for increased power.

In 1988 the Toyota Supra Turbo A was introduced, and was designed to win the Group A championship. This was a limited run of 500 Toyota Supra Turbo A’s,and produced 263hp (196kw) making it the fastest Japanese road car at the time, but this only lasted till the Nissan Skyline R32 GT-R made its appearance.

With the next generation of the Toyota Supra,Toyota completely redesigned the body with styling cues based on the Ferrari F40,and a new engine which came in two versions naturally aspirated and twin turboed.

The turbos operated in sequential mode, this setup had a pair of equally sized turbos with all the exhaust going to one turbo first which gave reduced lag, then at 4000 rpm the exhaust is also sent to the second turbo for pre boost,at 4500 rpm both turbos output is sent to the engine. The sequential mode giving better low rpm response and increased boost at higher rpm.

This fourth generation Toyota Supra or Mark IV also came equipped with a new 6 speed Gertrag gearbox,4 piston calipers front and 2 piston calipers on the rear.Toyota went to great lengths to keep the kerbed weight down using aluminum for many suspension and engine components making the car 200lbs lighter than the previous Toyota Supra.

This also resulted in a better weight distribution with 51% on the front and 49% on the rear.Unfortunately this was to be the last of the Toyota Supra with imports to the US ending in 1999 and production in Japan ceasing in August 2002.

The Toyota Supra is another very popular platform for the sport of drifting,as it has all the necessary equipment, rear wheel drive, twin turbos, good weight distribution and definite sex appeal.Just imagine a Toyota Supra and a Skyline going hard at it on the drift pad,all the smoke all the noise what could be better.
