The large scale premium model cars produced today are highly detailed, these are made with as much attention to detail as possible. They usually have working suspension systems and turning steering meaning that by turning the steering wheel inside the model car it turns the front wheels.
By lifting the opening bonnet / hood on the model car you get a birds eye view of the highly detailed
engine compartment which will have all wiring and hoses plus the appropriate stickers / transfers on air cleaner, valve covers and such.By opening the doors on the model car you will find a complete interior with carpets and either cloth or vinyl seats depending on the model it represents all seat belts and seat adjustments, fully detailed dash board, some even go to the detail of having opening glove compartments and opening ashtrays,I even have some model cars in my own collection that the windows can be wound up and down and one has the keys hanging from the ignition switch now how’s that for detail.
The same goes for the trunk / boot upon opening it you will see spare tire and jack plus even toolkits in some brands of model cars.
The organized collecting of model cars developed quickly especially on both sides of the Atlantic in
America and the United Kingdom. The first instances of this collecting of model cars came about when collectors seeking certain models and there variations began cataloguing the models which in turn started driving the prices for rare model cars up.This then lead to a reaction in the market place as well in the late 70’s with the movement started by Matchbox where as manufacturers listened to the wishes and perceived desires of the model car collector and intentionally catered to these wishes and desires to try and capture a higher price market segment for these models.
This movement gave rise to the premium side of the model car market as we know it today. This collectors market also lead to licensing aspects that started in the early 80’s, where as companies
producing these model cars would have a licensing agreement with the real car companies to reproduce replica models of their cars weather they be concepts, current production,or models that were no longer produced.Okay there you have it a brief rundown on the model car scene,so get out there and start collecting.
