Falcon GT And GTHO The Name Inspires Images Of Raw Horsepower, the Falcon GT and its more powerful sister the GTHO were the first true Australian muscle cars. The successful marriage of American muscle and an Aussie sedan, the Falcon GT.
The Falcon GT started life as the brain child of then Managing Director of Ford Australia Bill Bourke,
who decided to fit the Mustang 289c.i. V8 mated to a 4 speed gearbox, fit the up market Fairmont interior, throw in some Stewart Warner gauges,a chrome Hurst shifter, deep dished wood rimmed wheel,a few stripes, black out the grille and a smattering of GT badges onto the then XR Falcon sedan.Pow the Falcon GT was born. You could have your Falcon GT in any color as long as it was bronze or GT Gold as it was called.
The Falcon GT became the quintessential Aussie muscle car,it was also in those heady days the only performance 4 door sedan in the world,it was an Aussie first. The Falcon GT went on to evolve with engine capacity being increased from 289c.i. to 302c.i. then onto its ultimate form the Cleveland 351c.i. V8.The most sought after model of the Falcon GT started life with the release of the XW Falcon GT when Ford built a special version of the Falcon GT Called the Falcon GTHO the HO
standing for “handling options”this was developed with the intentions of winning the annual Bathurst 500.This Falcon GT and GTHO really looked the part with hood scoop, bonnet pins, fat stripes and Superoo decals,it just looked so fast and powerful that traffic light drags were won without having to do anything.
The absolute Top Dog of the Falcon GT is and always will be the XY Falcon GT which came with the famous “Shaker”an air scoop mounted on top of the engine that shook with engines revs as it poked thru the bonnet. The XY Falcon GT along with its rarer sister the Falcon GTHO Phase III is unarguably the most sought after and valuable as a collectible. In fact at a recent auction an XY Falcon GTHO Phase III sold for $683,650 not bad for a car that sold new for about $5400.
So there you have a very brief history of the Falcon GT.
