Dodge Charger

The Dodge Charger was the answer to a prayer for all mopar fans, with Ford and G.M. products winning on the track and strip. With the mighty Hemi on board,it was now time for the competition to play catch up with the Dodge Charger.

The Pontiac GTO was the car that started the muscle car era back in 1964, and it didn’t take long for Ford and G.M.’s other divisions to jump on the band wagon to get the sales. Dodge on the other hand had been producing cars that could equal or better the best that Ford or G.M. had to offer, but they lacked one important ingredient, they didn’t have a performance muscle car image. Dodge needed a car that would ooze muscle, so the Dodge Charger was born.

Did the public take to this Dodge Charger concept the enthusiastic response clearly indicated a big “YES “so the 1966 Dodge Charger was put into production. This introduction also coincided with the release of the new Street Version of their famous 426 Hemi,so the Dodge Charger was a double barreled shot at the Muscle Car Title, the new “Leader of the Dodge Rebellion.”

As for features this new Dodge Charger had them all,the grill had fully rotating headlights that no matter if they were open or closed the grill looked like one piece. The interior of the Dodge Charger consisted of four individual bucket seats with a full length centre console, the instrument panel was an interesting piece of gear as it didn’t use bulbs, but rather had 4 electroluminescent dash pods which housed the instruments. When it came to motorvation the Dodge Charger was offered only with V8 power, the base engine being the 318, then the 361 both being 2 barrel equipped, then came the 383 4 barrel and the new street 426 hemi.

A triple black,4 speed 1968 Dodge Charger was used in the film Bullitt, the chase between Steve Mcqueen in a Mustang GT and the hitmans Charger R/T is regarded as one of the greatest car chases ever filmed. A blown, black Dodge Charger was also the main feature in the first of the Fast and the Furious movies.

The television series the Dukes of Hazard featured a 1969 Dodge Charger named the General Lee which is regarded as the most recognizable car in the world. But in 1969 Dodge had its eye firmly fixed on nascar so they introduced one of the rarest and most desirable Dodge Chargers of all time, the Dodge Charger Daytona.

The Dodge Charger Daytona featured a pointed nose cone adding 18 inches to the front,it also had a large wing mounted over the trunk lid, plus rear facing scoops on the front fenders all of these added up to a very aerodynamic package for its time.Only 503 Dodge Charger Daytona’s were built with either the 440 magnum or the 426 hemi. These winged cars as they became known proved to be so fast that they were outlawed for the 1971 season.
