The Chevrolet Camaro was first introduced in 1966,it came as a 2 door coupe or convertible and could be optioned as an RS or SS and the little known Z28. The Chevrolet Camaro RS and SS were
appearance packages, the SS having either the 350 or 396c.i. V8. The Z28 option for the Chevrolet Camaro was not mentioned in sales literature, it was mainly developed to compete in the Transam series against its arch rival the Mustang. The Chevrolet Camaro Z28 came equipped with a 302c.i. V8 (to comply with SCCA Transam rules ), Muncie 4 speed, front discs, upgraded suspension and 15 inch rally wheels, helping it to win the championship in 1968 and 1969. In fact a Chevrolet Camaro Z28 with 302 V8 cross ram manifold and twin 4 barrel carbs and 4 wheel disc’s is worth a small fortune as a collectible. General Motors had an unwritten rule that no Chevrolet Camaro was to be fitted with an engine bigger than 400 cubic inches. But with the competition fitting ever increasing bigger engines in their cars, Chevrolet had little choice but to join in and put bigger engines in the Chevrolet Camaro.
