The Bugatti Factory was first established by Ettore Bugatti in 1909 with 47 years of production before closing. Now after 50 years the doors reopen thanks to the Volkswagen group who now own the Bugatti trademark.

The Bugatti factory was first established by Ettore Bugatti in 1909 at Molsheim, with the first Bugatti produced by the factory happening in 1910. But after 47 years of production by the Bugatti factory in which time it produced 7950 Bugattis the factory was forced to close, due in part to the death of its founder in 1956.

Today nearly 50 years later, the Bugatti factory is about to arise from the ashes and start producing the Bugatti Veyron making Molsheim once again the hub of the Bugatti factory world.

In April 1998 the Volkswagen Group took over the Bugatti trademark, and presented to the world a two door concept car which would later become known as the Bugatti Veyron 16.4 to be produced by the Bugatti factory at Molsheim. The first decision to go into serial production of the Bugatti Veyron 16.4 was made in 2001 with a factory production run of not more than 300 vehicles, although production of the Bugatti Veyron from the factory did not begin until September 2005.

The core of the investments made at the Bugatti factory in Molsheim were to the Atelier, in its architectural form this modern production Bugatti factory has been given very stylish features that go back to the history of the brand. The glassed light filled main hall with its southern exposure reminds a person of a Formula One laboratory more than a automobile manufacturing operation.

The whole complex is dominated by clinical cleanliness and precision workmanship, from the runway for the measurement of all relevant function and performance data to the generously proportioned water spraying system for testing the vehicle seal integrity, alongside a special light chamber where under the intense lighting any fault from the tiniest inconsistency in the paintwork is painfully highlighted. A test course has also been laid out on the green places at the front of the building, to supplement the compulsory road testing that concludes the Veyron’s production process. A logistics center has also been erected next to the Atelier that rounds out the complex of buildings that make up the Bugatti factory.
