1969 Dodge Charger
The 1969 Dodge Charger was a minor redesign of the previous model but the first to come with the famous R/T pack. This year also introduced the Charger Daytona designed specifically for Nascar racing, later to become known as the winged cars.
For 1969 the Dodge Charger was left virtually untouched, the sporty car appearance was enhanced by the use of a divided grille that had six functional air vents. The taillights an the 1969 Dodge Charger
were changed from the round projecting style to a side to side rectangular recessed style. These were surrounded by a black insert as in the 1968 model so as to retain the Dodge Chargers highway identity for 1969.Standard engine for the 1969 Dodge Charger was the 318 cubic inch V8 producing 230 horsepower. Two optional 383 cubic inch V8’s were offered, either in two or four barrel carburetor producing 290 and 330 horsepower respectively. In the 1969 Dodge Charger there was an R/T model that came with the 440 cubic inch Magnum as standard and the mighty 426 cubic inch Hemi with an output of 425 horsepower was the option. A high rate rallye type suspension was standard, but on the R/T and the 500 models a special handling package which consisted of heavy duty torsion
bars, heavy duty shocks, extra heavy duty rear springs and sway bar.In 1969 Dodge also built the Charger Daytona specifically for the Daytona 500. The 1969 Dodge Charger Daytona was a concerted effort by Dodge to take away the Nascar limelight from Ford. The Daytona featured a wind cheating bullet shaped nose cone, hidden head lights, front spoiler and a huge rear deck spoiler. These aerodynamic aids on the 1969 Dodge Charger Daytona compared with the Dodge Charger 500 made it 20% more aerodynamically efficient and an unrivalled 200 mph top speed.
Dodge built 505 of these Charger Daytona’s in 1969 just enough to beat the Nascar stipulated 500 unit
limit to qualify as a production model. Standard engine was the 440 cubic inch Magnum and the 426 cubic inch Hemi was an option. In 1969 the Dodge Charger Daytona won the Daytona 500 and 22 Grand National Races but did not get the manufacturers trophy this was taken by Ford. There was a total of 69,000 Dodge Chargers produced for the 1969 year. |
