Ford Mustang The 1967 Ford Mustang was the first major redesign of the very popular pony car so as to keep up with its major rivals. The Mustang would also receive upgrades in power allowing it to become much quicker and respected for those traffic light races. In 1967 Fords Mustang faced some serious competition for the first time since its launch, this resulted in
Ford evaluating the strengths and weaknesses for the upcoming 1967 Ford Mustang and deciding to give it a major redesign. Feeling the pressure from the competition (i.e. Camaro, Charger, Firebird, Cougar etc.) Ford needed to up the ante on the 67 Mustang and make it more powerful so that it could keep up with its competitors. The wheelbase remained the same but 2 inches was added to the overall length and the front track was increased by 2.5 inches. This increase allowed the Ford Mustang for 1967 to feature a 390 cubic inch big block V8 producing 320 horsepower as an optional extra. According to reports at the time the 1967
Ford Mustang 390 V8 equipped cars were cable of 0-60 mph times of 7.4 seconds and a top speed of 115 mph.Changes to the 1967 Ford Mustang were the side scoops that closely resembled real intakes and were body colored over the chrome scoops on previous models. Gone were the three gills that appeared next to the headlights as on the 65 and 66 model. The Grille on the 1967 Ford Mustang featured vertical and horizontal bars that went all the way out from the famous galloping horse in four directions.
The rear of the 1967 Ford Mustang, for the first time had taillights that were larger and concave in design, on the 2+2 fastback the roofline ran all the way back to the rear truck lid, which all in all gave the
rear a bulkier more performance oriented look. Option for the 1967 Ford Mustang included a GT package that came with driving lights, side stripes and a dual exhaust system, plus the hood could be ordered with dual recesses in it.In fact the “Eleanor” Mustang that featured in the Nicolas Cage remake of “Gone in 60 Seconds” was built around a 1967 Ford Shelby Mustang which in turn started life as a 1967 Ford Mustang.
